Graduation day is exciting! Wix Studio came to celebrate
Supporting local design academies is a mission close to our hearts. This is what happens when we take part in their graduation event.
Every year, hundreds of students graduate from design schools worldwide. As a fresh graduate, you’re so high from finally finishing the rollercoaster ride that is design school that the graduation evening is always an exciting event. It’s a whirlwind of mingling, getting drunk from cheap wine and polite compliments all around.
For the last two years, the Wix studio has been among the sponsors for the graduation exhibition of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem. As a Bezalel graduate myself I was excited to experience the event again, this time from a unique point of view. When Wix was asked to support the 2015 exhibition, I was fortunately one of the designers assigned to the project, and we got to work immediately.
Beer + Jelly = Happy Chit Chat
When we sponsor events like this, we like to get involved in the event itself. In this case, we decided to set up a beer stand inside the exhibition, to hopefully improve on the unfortunate cheap wine situation I mentioned earlier. We also wanted to chat with the fresh graduates, and introduce them to Wix and the studio as a cool workplace. So we all took turns trying to concentrate on being talkative while pouring sloppy cups of beer.
As is often the case, we had an impossibly short deadline to conceptualize and design a simple, cheap and cool concept for our beer stand. As you can see from the pictures below, we decided to decorate the stand with colorful wobbly jellies and posters with a matching color scheme. As a team of designers who thoroughly plan every detail of every project, ironically this wobbly jelly idea was quite random. 🙂 After seeing a picture of jelly that sparked an idea, we did some experiments, and once satisfied with the results we decided to go for it.
And so, a year after I graduated from Bezalel myself, I was once again surrounded by drunk students, fretful parents and casual strangers like myself (who all seemed desperate for a taste of the jelly that happened to be toxic and inedible, but settled for a cup of beer).
It was so much fun that when the 2016 graduation exhibition came around and we were asked to be a sponsor, we immediately said yes! We knew we wanted to set up and design our little beer stand again, but this time decided to go for a classic “ivy league” concept. Jerusalem is far from anything remotely preppy, so we thought it could be amusing. We had a lot of fun designing a makeshift coat of arms to brand our beer cups, and even quickly printed a matching flag to decorate our stand.
All in all, it was a great experience and we got a lot of love from all the young, talented designers we met at both events. We hope to see more happy drunk faces next year!
